GRegio Energie AG in Chur

Biomass becomes energy and biochar

We build biogas and wastewater plants, distribute wood gasification modules and support the plants in operation, from slurry to industrial wastewater. For several years we have also been developing hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC), which turns sewage sludge and residues into biochar.

Four business areas, one point of contact

Choose the field that suits your business. For every project, GRegio Energie AG is your point of contact and your contracting partner.

  • Heater skid: green frame with valves and drives in front of a building

For wastewater treatment plants and residues

    HTC: sewage sludge becomes biochar

Under pressure and heat, wet biomass becomes biochar within a few hours. The process is in the development and demonstration phase.

    GRegioflex: biogas from your slurry

A fixed-bed digester ferments the thin slurry from your farm. The solids return to the barn as bedding, and the combined heat and power (CHP) unit in the container delivers 20 to 50 kWe.

Industrial wastewater: treatment and biogas recovery

A container reactor breaks down the organic load of the wastewater and generates biogas for your business. Before construction, we carry out a preliminary trial.

Wood gasification: power and heat from wood chips

One module delivers 50 kWe and around 120 kWth and can be cascaded with further modules. We distribute the modules exclusively in Switzerland.

HTC: wet biomass becomes biochar in a few hours

In a closed system, biomass becomes biochar at around 200 °C and around 20 bar. The process releases energy and takes a few hours. Nature takes millions of years to do the same.

Where we stand: The process is in the development and demonstration phase. Together with ZHAW we investigated it in the laboratory and at pilot scale, and from 2018 to 2020 we tested it in a pilot and demonstration project of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE). In February 2025, pilot trials followed at the Buchs wastewater treatment plant (ARA Buchs). Whether an HTC plant can be used there on a large scale is being assessed.

Plants in operation and under construction

Four GRegioflex plants on farms in the cantons of Zurich, Thurgau, Lucerne and Aargau are running; a fifth is under construction. In addition there is a wood gasification module in Steinen SZ.

  • Aeugstertal ZH

GRegioflex, 50 kWe. Beef fattening with around 300 cattle, connected to the existing heat network. In operation since July 2025.

  • Lindauer AG, Steinen SZ

Wood gasification, 1 module of 50 kWe, operated with the joinery’s residual wood. In operation since 2025.

  • Abwasserverband Buchs Sevelen Grabs SG

HTC, pilot trials in February 2025, large-scale plant under assessment.

Experience the Energiepark Grischa

On the Rheinmühle site in Chur, the Energiepark Grischa shows how energy is generated from biomass, sun, water and wind. Interactive stations and multimedia installations make visible what usually stays hidden. The first stage, with the wood energy, solar energy and hydropower stations, opened to the public on 30 August 2025; the second, with the wind energy, biogas and HTC stations, opened on 24 October 2026.

The Energiepark Grischa is a joint project. The project sponsor is the Klima GRischa Klimastiftung Graubünden foundation, together with project partners: the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons (FHGR) is a partner, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) funds the project, and further partners are involved.
